Current elected politicians do not possess any real vision of where we are heading, let alone what course the World should take. The US is where one wish or expect such vision to arise, if only because they are powerful enough to set the course for the rest of the planet (of which I am part, as I am not a US citizen) or at least influence it. An excuse for not having such vision, maybe, is that the pace of change has been too great since WWII. Reagan had a vision, but a backward one that contributed to the current crisis. What is needed (it seems to me), however, is a government as radical as Reagan but with a successfull vision for this century. The current president does not have it. The tragedy is that he is blocking the way for a jump in awareness that the current system is unsustainable. Bush unknowingly was in the right track to achieve just that, but now Obama is simply taking the flack for why things are not working, as if he created the current finantial crisis. At the same time no proper reforms have been put into place. Any subsequent crisis will simply fuel the Republican popularity, who have a backward ionperative vision. So maybe yes, it has become a game of who will collapse first, China or the US. The irony is that the third world might possibly end up more resilient and better able to weather the incoming collapse of civilisation, if the latter reaches the proportions you mention.
A last comment, predicting a collapse amounts at this stage to little more than a linear extrapolation into the future of a given measure. This measure is bound to follow a sigmoid curve, as does anything that rests on finite resources. The real question maybe then is whether we are facing a tough landing as we approach the flat top branch of the sigmoid curve or whether this will will be a downward rebound towards zero (a true collapse). Sorry I like mathematical descriptions...

Wow and again! You have a way of writing that draws instant fascination. How do you achieve that? Light years ahead of the other bacteria populating this planet :) Ok, thanks for sharing this text and ideas. I have difficulty imagining that current governments are really aware of anything. By definition, the army of government consultants and informants around the US president are too busy portraying a rosy picture than generating true awareness. There is an information firewall surrounding the US president. Look at the last finantial crisis. It was foretold in a sense but the last one that seems to realize what was going on was the US president itself. Great stuff.
